Default So You Think You Are Having a Bad Day on The Water......

On the way back from a day at Hamburg Cove on the CT River we came upon this grounded vessel.

It was about 3:30pm and low tide is not until around 6:10pm. The next high tide won't be until 12:14am.

I am assuming it is a single engine vessel and hopefully the boat has a keel guard.

Anyone that has been on the CT River more then a few times knows to stay away from this area even at high tide. Anyway, just a reminder to watch the chart plotter. Especially in an area that is unknown. This grounding could have easily been avoided as even my 2 year old plotter shows that this area less then 1 ft at low mean tide.

I wish this captain the best of luck.

Rob

Maybe he was spending a day at the sand bar !

Hope hes gets by with minimal to no damage.

Reminds me of last season. There is a large shipping channel leading to the inlet here in NJ. On the wrong side of the cans is a lot of shoaling, like right on the wrong side too.

I was noticing an old Chris Craft perhaps a early 80's late 70's coming towards me but on that 'wrong side'. Appeared to be doing 15 knots.... then 0.

Poor fellow augered it right on in. Bend his shafts, tore up rudders.

I got as close as I could to make sure he was alright and he yells over, "Yea, I'm ok. I think I hit something though..."

Yes.... yes sir you did. Earth.

Looks like the South end of Selden Creek. So many boats go aground there I'm surprised they don't have a snack bar set up!

You are correct. It was just west of the south end of Selden Creek. The sand bar that makes you go south on the river and then do a 180deg turn to get in the channel for Selden Creek, when approaching from the north.

This captain would have been OK if he had been over to his port side by about 50 yards. I am sure he will be next time......

I believe it is a Grand Banks Eastbay 49.
